Associate Professor André La Gerche is a Consultant Cardiologist at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, Alfred Hospital, and the Baker Institute’s Specialist Clinics. He has a special interest in cardiac imaging, exercise physiology, sports medicine, and pulmonary circulation.
After completing his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, André completed a PhD and 4 years of postdoctoral research on the effects of endurance exercise on the heart at the University of Melbourne and University Hospital of Leuven, Belgium.
He has a strong interest in the relationship between exercise and heart function and is renowned for his research in Australia’s sporting community. He was recently appointed as the Director of the National Centre for Sports Cardiology, a group of clinical researchers who have specialised in sports cardiology. He is also the Director of Sports Cardiology at the Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute, leads the Clinical Research Domain and Co-leads the Physical Activity Program.
A/Prof La Gerche is a Visiting Professor at the University Hospital of Leuven and Supervisor at the Melbourne and Deakin University. He is a National Heart Foundation Future Leadership Fellow and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Career Development Fellow. André has greatly contributed his knowledge and experience to research with over 160 peer-reviewed published and textbook chapters.
André has been widely recognised and awarded for his research, most recently awarded the Baker Institute Sir Laurence Muir Prize for Outstanding Medical Research in 2018 and was awarded for the best research abstract in 2017 at the Pulmonary Hypertension Society of Australia and New Zealand Annual Scientific Meeting.
