Peter trained both in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery before completing further training for 12 months at the Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, UK. Following this, he completed another 12 months of training in the USA, spending 6 months focusing on adult cardiac surgery at the Brigham Women’s Hospital in Boston and another 6 months at the Boston Children’s Hospital in paediatric cardiac surgery.

Mr Skillington has a strong interest in aortic valve surgery, mitral valve surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, arrhythmias surgery, and minimally invasive heart valve surgery.  He has the largest experience across Australia and New Zealand performing over 390 cases since 1992.

Peter has maintained a strong commitment to cardiothoracic education, research and the industry. For 14 years, Peter was on the board of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and was also the Chairman of the Science & Education Committee for ANZSCTS from 2008 to 2014. He works closely with 6th-year medical students at the Epworth Hospital in Richmond and Cardiothoracic Surgery Trainees at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
