Paul completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Melbourne and completed his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). He then completed a PhD in cardiac electrophysiology followed by post-doctorate studies at the University of California, San Francisco, USA. His research received a number of awards including the Young Investigator Award in Research and The Ralph Reader Prize from the Cardiac Society Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Sparks has a strong commitment to research and the supervision and training of future electrophysiologists and PhD students. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne. His current research interests are in cardiac arrhythmias particularly on atrial fibrillation, stroke prevention and the relationship between Omega-3 fatty acids and the heart.
