Associate Professor Phillip Hayward is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon in Melbourne, Victoria. He has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery, and the treatment of aortic valve disease, mitral valve disease and coronary artery disease.

A/Prof Hayward is passionate about innovative techniques for cardiothoracic surgery in elderly patients when traditional surgery is not a viable option. He is one of the first surgeons in Australia to adopt a hybrid technique that combines minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) surgery with stenting, instead of open heart surgery.

Phillip completed his medical degree at Oxford University and physician training at Brompton, Guys’ and St Thomas’ Hospitals in the UK. He specialised in Cardiothoracic Surgery completing the West London Specialist Registrar Program before travelling to Australia as a Fellow in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

He initially began consulting as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon in the UK before eventually moving to Australia and commenced practising in Melbourne at Austin Health. He also holds admitting rights at Knox Private Hospital and Mulgrave Private Hospital.

Outside of his clinical work, he has maintained an active role in research and training working at the University of Melbourne as an Associate Professor and regularly contributing to peer-reviewed research journals and speaking at cardiothoracic conferences.
