Biography

Associate Professor Jayme Bennetts is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon based in South Australia. He has current clinical appointments as the Director of the Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at the Flinders Medical Centre, and Staff Specialist at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in South Australia.

Dr Bennetts completed a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the Flinders University of South Australia. He completed further training at St Richard’s Hospital in the UK, Flinders Medical Centre in South Australia, and the St Vincent’s Hospital and Westmead Hospital in New South Wales.

He began his fellowship in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the Children’s Hospital in Westmead before moving to Toronto, Canada to further his training in Cardiovascular Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital under the tutelage of Tirone David and Michael Borger. He completed his time abroad as a Clinical Paediatric Fellow at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children in December 2005. In 2006, Dr Bennetts worked as a Senior Fellow in the Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at the Flinders Medical Centre in South Australia.

Dr Bennetts is the current Vice President and Chair, Government Relations Committee for Australia and New Zealand Society of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery (ANZSCTS) and is on the advisory board and committee for many other medical associations and groups. He is currently Clinical Lead, Cardiac Surgery Research Group at the Flinders Medical Centre. Dr Bennetts has been the Principal Researcher for a number of research awards and greatly contributed his knowledge and experience to publications and authored books.

Dr Bennetts has diligently worked with Flinders Medical Centre to develop improved outcomes for Indigenous Australians enabling them to now undertake cardiac surgeries for ATSI Australians with equivalent mortality to Non-ATSI patients, improved access and education for ATSI patients travelling remote to South Australia and Northern Territory, as well as, establishing a major aortic pathology service at FMC.

Additionally, Dr Bennetts has helped to establish a collaborative service between Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery for transcatheter valve procedures with Associate Professor Ajay Sinhal, he assists with providing access to cardiac surgery overseas in Fiji and Tanzania communities with Open Heart International, and has worked with the government to create a framework by which TAVI has been introduced to Australia.
